Hats
A série Chapéus (2000) é composta por pequenos armários hospitalares afixados à parede e dispersos pelo espaço expositivo como uma pontuação surreal. Armários destinados, simbolicamente, a “guardar” nossas cabeças — eventualmente.
É assim que se apresentam os armários-chapéus: dispositivos de contenção e de deslocamento da percepção. Ao aproximar-se e olhar para dentro deles, o visitante pode encontrar sua própria imagem refletida — uma autoalteridade instantânea — ou ser surpreendido por sons indefinidos, instruções, vestígios de presença.
De dentro desses compartimentos, é também possível observar o ambiente externo, agora mediado por superfícies e imagens que se interpõem entre o olhar-de-dentro e a paisagem-de-fora. O que se vê já não é o espaço em si, mas sua transformação — filtrada, desviada, reconfigurada pelo dispositivo.
Entre objeto funcional e abrigo simbólico, os Chapéus instauram pequenas câmaras de percepção: lugares onde a cabeça — e, com ela, o pensamento e o olhar — é simultaneamente guardada e deslocada.
The series Hats (2000) is composed of small hospital wardrobes affixed to the wall and dispersed throughout the exhibition space like surreal punctuation. Cabinets meant, symbolically, to “store” our heads—eventually.
This is how the hat-wardrobes present themselves: devices of containment and perceptual displacement. When approaching and looking inside them, the viewer may encounter their own reflected image—an instantaneous self-alterity—or be surprised by undefined sounds, instructions, traces of presence.
From within these compartments, it is also possible to observe the surrounding environment, now mediated by surfaces and images that interpose themselves between the inside-looking gaze and the outside landscape. What is seen is no longer the space itself, but its transformation—filtered, deflected, reconfigured by the device.
Between functional object and symbolic shelter, the Hats establish small chambers of perception: places where the head—and with it thought and vision—is simultaneously stored and displaced.
