Light without light
A instalação Luz sem luz (2004) estrutura-se a partir de um paradoxo — e, ao mesmo tempo, de um exercício do óbvio. Se ao olho é dado ver e à luz cabe a função de tornar visível, entre essas duas operações se estende um campo de incontáveis gradações — algo que, intuitivamente, todos reconhecemos.
A obra se apresenta como uma caixa preta. Em desdobramento direto de Dupla exposição, esse dispositivo é revelado por fachos luminosos operados em três estágios distintos.
No primeiro, a ativação depende do próprio observador, que aciona a luz no interior de caixas onde performers atuam pautados por sua incidência — procedimento que remete à pedagogia cênica beckettiana, na qual a luz regula e autoriza a ação.
No segundo estágio, a luz é entregue ao acaso: torna-se texto em circulação no espaço escuro, escrevendo-se e desfazendo-se na própria atmosfera.
Por fim, no terceiro momento, três pequenos monitores apresentam uma narrativa circular: um performer fecha janelas que se abrem e se fecham incessantemente — janelas dentro de outras janelas, num jogo infinito de enquadramentos e ocultamentos.
The installation Light Without Light (2004) is structured around a paradox—and, at the same time, around an exercise in the obvious. If the eye is given the capacity to see, and light the function of making visible, between these two operations lies a field of countless gradations—something we intuitively all recognize.
The work presents itself as a black box. As a direct unfolding of Double Exposure, this device is revealed through beams of light operated in three distinct stages.
In the first, activation depends on the observer, who switches on the light inside boxes where performers act according to its incidence — a procedure that recalls Beckettian scenic pedagogy, in which light regulates and authorizes action.
In the second stage, light is handed over to chance: it becomes text circulating through the dark space, writing and undoing itself within the atmosphere.
Finally, in the third moment, three small monitors present a circular narrative: a performer closes windows that continuously open and close — windows within other windows, in an infinite play of framing and concealment.
